Bologna Process

On 19 May 2005, the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia (RA) signed the Bergen Communique, and thus Armenia officially joined the Bologna Process.

Armenia joined the Bologna Process in 2005, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to modernize its higher education system and integrate into the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The Bologna Process is a collective effort of 49 countries and the European Commission to harmonize higher education systems across Europe, aiming to enhance transparency, comparability, and recognition of qualifications, while fostering mobility and employability of graduates.

From 2012 to 2015, Armenia had the unique opportunity to host the Bologna Process Secretariat and in May 2015 to organize the Ministerial summit in conjunction with the 4th Policy Forum. The high-level meeting brought together ministers of education from across the Europe to discuss and shape the future of higher education cooperation.

For Armenia this was a significant milestone, reflecting country’s active engagement and growing leadership within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Hosting the Secretariat placed Armenia at the heart of the Bologna Process coordination. It fostered closer collaboration with European partners, increased visibility of Armenia’s education system and brought valuable technical expertise and policy dialogue directly to the country. The Ministry of Education and Science delegated the responsibility for the Bologna Secretariat to ArmENIC and appointed Gayane Harutyunyan, the director of ArmENIC, as the Head of the Secretariat.
